Falling for Fall

Tag Alle!

Fall has come to Gainesville! (Autumn to those of you who don't speak American)
This basically means you can go outside and still breath - Hooray :) Most days are around 25 degrees, beautiful clear blue skies and if you're especially luckily a little breeze, it really is lovely and I can understand why locals kept telling me the Fall weather is the reason they stay in Florida. Due to the weather cooling down the Chop Monster has been allowed out and about a bit more which he loves. He has been making a lot of friends, including his very own member of the Gainesville PD!

She loved him so much she asked to take his picture and I said only if she returned the favour for this blog! :) After this he finally got to come to my new favourite hang out - Maudes Classic Cafe, it's my Cherry Reds substitute!

We seemed to have spent a lot of time in nature the last few weeks which has definitely cheered me up no end.

After Maudes our friend Jasmin took us to a huge park. Jasmin says she doesn't really like dogs but Randle is trying to work his magic on her...

after all....who wouldn't love this face....

We recently went out to Paines Prarie, apparently you can usually see 'gators, bison and wild horses....all we saw was this guy....

Near Paines Prarie is a cute little historic town called Micanopy. In 1821, the newly constructed hamlet of Micanopy became the first distinct United States town in the Florida Territory. So to Americans it's mega old! It is very small but has some AMAZING houses and possibly the cutest coffeshop/bakery I've ever seen!

This place is called the Moss Bakery and I purchased myself something called a Hello Dolly, it's basically the most amazing thing on earth....a cookie bar base, with a topping made of coconut, dark chocolate, pecans and a graham cracker crust...heaven!

So October is Gainesville is important due to the fact it is Homecoming. I ended up asking what this actually was in one of my classes and it is basically  a weekend where all the alumni come back into town for a football game and to party. There is also a parade! Can you imagine?? Kinda makes Anglia Cup Old boys look a bit lame...

So we went to check out the parade, Randle got to come too! It was pretty weird to be honest, lots of official looking people in soft top cars with fake smiles plaster on their faces (along with a whole load of make-up) and lots of random floats including one for the local laundrette?! Of course the cheer leaders and the all important football team made an appearance....riding a Fire Engine and a Dumptruck obviously!

There was also a guy riding a bike shaped like an Aligator....apparently he's a local celebrity because of this.....Americans really are WEIRD!

I've already sat through one football game so didn't feel the need to do this again, even though it was Homecoming - I don't think I'm doing so well at being a Florida Gator but hey-ho! So instead of sitting in a sweltering stadium and paying $7 for a coke my roommate and I went out to Lake Walhberg. This lake has been cleared so you can't become Gator-bait and is now a facility for UF students. If you have a student ID you can rent Kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards all for free, you can even take sailing lessons. There is also docs to jump off into the water. Not bad eh?

Cassandra and I settled on a paddle boat (mainly because we are lazy) and set off to check out the shoreline and see what was happening. It turns out people actually live on the edges of the lake, the houses were just breath taking! Talk about how the other half live!!

This one to the right as you look at the screen was my personal fave! The picture isn't all that clear but the entire house is pretty much glass so you can see the view from everywhere, they have a private jetty and if you look closely they even have a little sun house. I wonder if whoever owns it has a son who's in line to inherit...?

Other than homecoming there is another important event in October and that of course is Halloween! Pretty much everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is pumpkin flavoured and decorated in fall colours. They take it very seriously it seems! This is the front of a local fresh produce supermarket!....

Even the post boxes are getting in on it!
Talking of postboxes, after it being a little bit quiet on that front I seem to have stumbled across quite a few later, I know you've all been waiting with baited breath so I present to you more 'Postbox Porn'!

 Wasn't that just lovely :0)

Well in all honesty I should probably disappear now and actually go plan some German lessons....I can't just play them random dance songs every lesson even if it does illustrate a grammar rule exceptionally well....

Dramatic Skies and Drag Shows

Well hello there folks.

It's time for an update me thinks :)

Where to begin? Hmmm.....well maybe I'll just start off with an update on the man himself as we all know he's the real reason you read this little blog of mine. What to say about Randle.....well, it's safe to say he's made himself at home in our new apartment.....

It seems moving to Florida means you no longer have to sleep on a dog bed.

You''ll also be pleased to hear he's been making new friends.....with cats.....

Unfortunately the cat does not seem so keen, I tried to explain to him why but he just didn't understand.

Don't worry though because as usual Randle has won the adoration of the masses. I've already told you about the lovely neighbourhood we walk in every day. Well on Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a running club run (no pun intended) by a lovely couple called Dana and Rick. The entire group seem to have to fallen for the slobbery one....check him out working his magic.....

I must admit after having seen the picture of Randle and I, I finally see why people always say he's a big dog. He looks HUGE!

So apart from Randle flirting what have we actually been up to the last couple of weeks I hear you ask.
Well I'll tell you, the weekend before last Randle and I finally managed to get a ride (that's American for getting a lift) down to visit my parents on the ranch - Hooray! Unfortunately we seemed to choose the weekend that had the worst weather since I've been there...check out the rain....

There is a plus side to the stormy weather....check out these skies above Lake Okeechobee....

 Just breathtaking!.

But the very best part about the rain in Florida is that as soon as it stops the sun comes out again :). I'm not the only one who appreciates that fact....look at him sunning himself...and there I was worry he wouldn't adapt!
B

Randle and I both had a great time in Okeechobee. Randle got to hang out with his buddies and to go for a swim everyday

And I got to hang out with my buddy too....

Unfortunately as happy as I was to see the grumpy ole' colonel again the feeling certainly was not mutual. I even bought him carrots but it did not seem to make a blind bit of difference!
It seems once you've retired you want to stay that way and don't appreciate some British girl coming along and making you actually work.

Alongside swimming and riding both Randle and I spent the entire weekend stuffing our faces. I got to go my favorite restaurant in Okeechobee. It's called Lightsey's....

check out the country decor!

It's like a proper Oyster shack, selling mainly shrimp, oysters and scallops but also frogs and gator! I had shrimp, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies and my new ultimate favourite....pumpkin bread! It's a good job I don't live in Okeechobee and have not found anywhere to get it in Gainesville as I think I might have a slight problem. Wash that all down with Sweet Tea (iced tea) and feeling the cold despite it still being 20 degrees at 9pm and it seems I have gone very Southern very quickly!

oh pumpkin bread i do love you so!
Don't worry though Folks, as I said, Randle got his fair share too.
Here he is getting hand-fed steak by my mum....steak, I might add, that came from the ranches own cattle....oh and it was a T-bone....is it any wonder he likes to visit??

Oh yeah....do you remember those puppies...well they are now 10 weeks old, 3 have already gone off to their new homes, 3 are still left and they got bigger....and cuter....and naughtier....

Unfortunately Randle was not too impressed by them...apparently they aren't as fun as cats....

Meanwhile back in Gainesville...

It seems Gainesville has been determined to do a cracking impression of England with gloomy grey skies and drizzle in the mornings. It's just a depressing here as it is at home!

I've been doing my usual thing of spending a lot of time walking Randle We've utilized his status as a service dog to get on the buses a few times.  Here he is waiting patiently....

Apologies but the postbox porn seems to have dried up a bit, I need to find a new neighbourhood to creep on (American for perve on!) although I did find this amongst the trees...
weird right??

Oh and I also came across one of the many swamps in my area. Who'd have thought a swamp could be beautiful??

University is going well, I have lots of work but I' can't really complain too much when my main research project is on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It's like someone sat down and thought, "hmmm, what would Sam most like to study" "
Not a bad reading list....
And don't worry, Randle is helping out where possible. On Monday my friend and fellow German teacher, Larissa, came round to watch 2 German Vampire films, one from the 1920's and one from the 1970's. It turns out that is Randle's thing! He was transfixed!

Oh and Randle and I also received our FIRST bit of pen-pal post since we arrived in Gainesville (**cough cough - 6 weeks ago **cough **cough, not complaining**)  Thanks ever so Amy :) it made our day!

Randle was very impressed that it was addressed to him too.

But don't worry everyone, it's not been all uni reading. I've done some fun stuff too. All work and no play and all that! I went to my first punk show in Gainesville a couple of weeks ago. It made me feel well and truly at home. Grubby bar, Tattoos, beards, guitars, screaming...what more could I ask for? In a couple of weeks the annual punk festival 'Fest' is coming and I am very excited! I think my taste in music might be my downfall with regards to becoming completely Southern! Country music just doesn't have enough anger!

The show I went to see was great and it's even better because apparently Gainesville doesn't have health and safely laws so everyone was moshing properly and they were even allowed to crowd surf - the way it should be!

And finally, last Saturday, thanks to Madeline I managed to tick something off my bucket list and that was going to a drag show! It was so much fun. The Queens were amazing, it's like how the hell does he have curves like that??

 Thanks for the fun girls!

So I think that's about it for today. I do have another video, I put it on Facebook a few weeks ago but if you haven't seen it yet you need to (it was too big to upload) you can find it here https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1472587613014616&set=o.781291995236325&type=2&theater

Just a reminder of how special he really is!

Well I'm off to continue my transformation into a proper south Florida cowgirl with a bit of bed time reading....

 Over and out.
